Fall Falls on the Falls

Fall Arrives

I had the opportunity to explore Dingman’s Falls today.  It’s a pleasant spot and wasn’t over-run by gawkers.  The light was nice and a passing shower left a luminosity in the woods, which are just showing the early signs of Autumn.

Around the Block

Into the Meadow

Having returned from the photographer’s paradise of the Maine Coast, I took up my regular habits again…

Up the hill, left into the woods; out of the woods into the meadow; regard with mixed feelings the new windmills; left again into the woods; around the circle and down the hill through the tall evergreens; past the lower fields and back into the meadow at the bottom; up the long haul with rain threatening, but interesting beasts and wildflowers.  Another thoughtful look at the new windmills in the distance, then home at exactly the right moment.

Maine is great, and I’d go back in a nanosecond, but home is sweet.

The Towers

The Towers, Prouts Neck, Maine

The Towers, built circa 1870 on Prouts Neck on the Maine Coast, is now shared by multiple branches of my host’s extended family (though not all at the same time!). His great grandfather bought the place from a sea captain’s widow, her husband presumed to have been lost at sea. Six generations have enjoyed the old house, and it’s easy to see why.  It’s located about 50 pleasant walking yards from the studio of Winslow Homer, which overlooks the Cliff Walk and the Atlantic Ocean, and is known to have been a great source of inspiration for the great artist.

I am most grateful for the opportunity to have used it as my base of operations for a few days in Maine.
