No Sour Grapes

 (Frank Burnside)

Doc’s Grape Arbor

For over a half century, I have been fed, entertained, educated and made to feel at home by the family who bought the place next door to my family’s home at Harveys Lake.  Earlier this month, Doc died at the age of 93, fully sensate nearly to the last. His lovely wife died in 1974, and almost ever since, Doc had lived not in the huge house where the family congregates every summer, but in “The Little House” at the edge of the lake.

So this was, in a way, a sad summer for my dear friends, but not entirely so.  The second generation gathered here, with many of the third and fourth generations represented as well, for they too have embraced the magic of this place, and that will continue, as will Doc’s grape arbor and my profound gratitude for what Doc and Ruth brought into my life.

The Pond Again

Meet You at the Pond

Once again Phil and I take to the pond, and once again it is different.  When last we visited, the path to the pond was surrounded by a sea of purple wildflowers.  You’d never know it now.  And although the pond is the destination, it’s pretty much an anti-climax, as Phil observed.  It’s just the place where we turn around.

Drop In Any Time

Seeing Stars

Somewhat strapped for material lately, I had a storm of activity after a recent storm passed through.
