Shadows & Leaves

Last week a friend commented on one of my photos that had a leaf and its own shadow.  It got me to thinking, and here are the results of a nice walk in the woods on this autumn day.

It seems to me that one should not think so much of the light that shines upon you, but on the shadow you cast.

Visitors to my web site have no doubt seen the words of Thoreau – “It’s not what you look at that matters, but what you see.”  That lesson was brought home to me today by my good friend Phil.  We were out on one of our photo-safaris, cruising slowly down a gravel road, when Phil says, “Nice light on that little tree.”  I stopped the car, got out and took about twenty photos.  When I was done, Phil said, “Take one of the whole tree.”  “Why?” I asked, “It’s not much to look at.”

“Ah,” said my wise friend, “It’s not what you look at that matters, but what you see. There’s a lesson here if you take a picture of the whole tree.”  That little tree is the first photo in the slide show.
